The Inception of Scrolley Tips
Originally, there were 3 of us that formed MN & J Enterprises in 1992 after we invented the concept of Scrolley Tips. Mich, Nik and John formed MN&J and between us managed to create this business while we all worked full time jobs. In 1998 our business partner John decided to go his own way so the 2 remaining partners Mich and Nik continued to grow Scrolley Tips from a part time hobby to a full time business that is still thriving and growing. We met each other at what was then known as Rothmans of Pall Mall where we both worked together in sales and marketing. With over 10 years experience between us in the tobacco industry, it was this that led us to discover a big gap in the filter market here in Australia; so we decided to fill that niche with what would become Scrolley Tips!
We later formed the company MN&J Scrolley Tips Pty Ltd but little did we know our Scrolley Tips would still be going strong nearly 20 years on! Being roll your own smokers ourselves, we felt that adding a strip of scrolled up filter card was a much better way to enjoy our smoke and heaps better than a filter plug! At that time we were cutting up business cards like most did then but that was so messy and such a hassle it got us thinking of ways to improve the whole experience. We discussed how cool it would be if somebody made a packet of filter card tips already perforated which you could buy at your local smoke shop. Unfortunately, there was no such product available in Australia midway through 1992 so after months of research, number crunching and marketing, we decided to make our own chemical free filter card tips and call them Scrolley Tips.
What also concerned us by using business cards as a roach was that adding heat to the print or laminate on this particular cardboard was releasing harmful vapours which we in turn inhaled along with the smoke. This is in fact what spurred us on to make our Scrolley Tips chemical free and going further with oxygen bleaching the card which is made from recycled rag pulp instead of wood pulp. Even the glue is made from natural gum and everything Scrolley is Environmentally Friendly and Fully Recyclable.
The exciting part for us was that WE were prepared to pay good money for them; not just for the convenience but for the experience of enjoying the full strength and taste. We knew the discerning smokers out there wouldn't hesitate in paying for such a convenience either so we set about getting trademarks plus a patent and finding a manufacturer who could make such a product. By late August 1993, with a boot full of Scrolley Tips, we drove to South Australia to launch them because at the time cannabis was decriminalised there so we figured it was a good place to start. 1st stop, to meet the man behind the smoke chain in Adelaide and he was so impressed with our product, he bought everything we had on board with us at the time. After celebrating our good fortune we headed back home to plan our next move and of course, buy more stock.
Being that we live in Melbourne we spent our free time between working full time jobs visiting smoke shops and advertising in Beat magazine to help sales along. In time we found a US distributor and we sold in USA in around 100 stores for just over 10 years till we were muscled out of the market with a flood of cheaper copies including our distributor's in a different format. 'They' say imitation is the highest form of flattery!
If we had Scrolley Tips manufactured in China it would have been a different story because they'd be a hell of a lot cheaper to make there than what they are to manufacture here in Australia. I think this is why so many companies outsource overseas because it's becoming a joke how expensive it is to make products here. We are very proud to be an Aussie company since 1993 with an Australian made product . We know our fans are very loyal to the Scrolley brand so being 'Australian Made' means something to them too. There has been a flood of cheap imported copies available over the last few years including local copies at certain stores we won't name, yet our Scrolley sales are growing every year so thank you for that! Over the years our Scrolley brand has predominantly grown with word of mouth as it became almost impossible to advertise anywhere up until recently when we found a couple of very open and aware magazines called Nexus and Uncensored who allowed us to advertise with them. It's been a joy knowing the consumers of Scrolley Tips are in love with our idea and are very loyal to the brand. Our Scrolley fans are proud of our product and are happy to spread the word to their friends and it's because of this, Scrolley's are growing more popular year after year.
